discovered that the couple had been on a crime spree that started in southern california on august 28th. that's when darnell washington escaped from san bernardino county jail with his wife's help. five days later on september 2nd, darnell is suspected of shooting and wounding with a shotgun an l.a. county sheriff's deputy who approached him in the city of south el monte in the san gabriel valley. now the couple is suspected also in a number of other crimes, including carjacking and robbery between southern california and northern california. on october 5th, susie ko was killed in her hercules home. >> it's a very big break. and we've said right along that finding the car would be one of the key pieces of evidence that we need to help us try to solve this case. and particularly since king county was able to find suspects in the vehicle, that gives us even more of a lead than if we had found it parked on a street somewhere. >> reporter: now again, hercules police are not calling the husband and wife suspects in the homicide of susie ko, but they will question them as soon as they are able. we

focused, everyone. >> yes. good morning. yesterday in california was where some of the worst weather in the country was. we had a couple of tornadoes. some of those were near the sack kra men tow areas. by california standards it did get everyone's attention. the other thing we have to worry about as we go through the next 48 hours is what's going to happen down in the caribbean. we are watching tropical storm sandy. this one is heading north wards. jamaica, cuba, then the central bahamas. this storm tracks not all that far away from florida. we're not expecting a direct impact. with the uncertainty coming this close to florida, we should see rip current, large waves on the east coast beaches. then the storm is off to the east coast sometime sunday into monday. where is the storm heading after that? a lot of questions. this high pressure is going to block it. it's not going to easily head out to sea. it's a race between the cool air and cold air. this could get sucked up to the north. we haven't ruled out new england impacts and the canadian maritimes. there's not a lot of bad weathe

's newsroom". patti ann: california's governor is taking action as drivers deal with more record breaking prices at pump. prices soaring to an all-time high this weekend receiving an average of $4.67 for a gallon of regular. that number spiking 50 cents in just one week. california drivers are struggling with the jump. >> i think prices are ridiculous. >> people working, you know, they need a break. it's too high, it's way too high. >> i try not to drive unless i really have to. patti ann: stu varney is the host of "varney & company" and he joins us now with more on this spike in gas prices. good morning stu. >> good morning patti ann. the news this morning that the spike appears to have stopped. the other side of the coin there has been no retreat in gas prices in california. as you mentioned 4.67 is the statewide average. most calfornians when they go to fill up are paying $100 for that fill up. if you look at prices and how they spiked in key cities of california you can see what we're talking about here. for example, in san diego the average for regular now is 4.73. that is up 56 cent

at the pump. nowhere is the price higher than in the state of california where this morning there is yet another new record high for a gallon of gas. and no matter where you live, if you've got sticker shock now, you're in for one more jolt before things get better. bringing us the story is the newest member of our abc news team, brandi hitt, who joins us live from los angeles. good morning, brandi and welcome. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. oh, thank you so much. you're right. california gas prices set another new record overnight, and drivers cringe every time they pull up to stations like this one where it's 5.69 for supreme, but oil industry experts say relief is on the way. california motorists woke this morning to a cruel price hike at the pump. after jumping dramatically overnight, the average gallon of gas is now the highest in the nation, at 4.65 and climbing. >> gas prices are almost $5 a gallon. i mean it's ridiculous. my car right here takes almost $100 to fill it up. >> reporter: drivers haven't seen these prices since 2008. gas in new york, connecticut and new hampshire

in california's prisons. the report showed that some phones come from guards and other prison workers. 20 workers have been fired for that offense. one female prison work accused of bearing a inmate's child quit rather than undergo a test. others were caught sending nude photos or love letters on the phones. while romance is a motivating factor, the real motivator is cash. prisoners pay up to $1,000 for each phone. inmates use phones to rung street gangs and other organized crime. 4,000 bucks for a strip club using public funds. leaders of the port of oakland are on the the hot seem. maritime operations direct james kwan racked up a $4500 bill at a houston strip club back in 2008. te it was spent to enter stain shipping executives. kwan submitted a receipt and was reimbursed the entire amount. they held an emergency meeting on reimbursement policies on friday and met again tonight about an hour ago. however, they aren't confirming kwan was the person in question. they plan to hold more meetings this week and are in the process of updating several employee policies. >>> we're staying in oa
: in other news, the search is on for the suspect in a mysterious and fatal shooting in california. inglewood, california, police saying that a man and his 4-year-old son were killed and three others hurt when a masked gunman attacked them. the neighborhood put on high alert as a swat team moved in, a neighbor recalls the sound of the gunfire. >> i just heard bam, bam, bam. >> the gunman set fire to the house before shooting the victims. he may have remained inside the house as it burned. think think his body might be in there as well. >> the center for disease control reporting 23 deaths total. so far, doctors confirm 284 cases across 16 states. there is a danger of more cases developing in those receiving the shots. elizabeth prann has the latest. >> so many patients on edge as they wait to see if they develop investigation linked to the contaminated steroids shot or worse, meningitis. >> my husband is part of me. he is my other half. >> kathryn can only hope and pray while her husband bob fights for his life after being injected with a bad batch of medicine. >> chills off, my gosh, he -- h
a look as the shuttle make its 12-mile trip from los angeles to its new home at the california science center. stephanie stanton talked to the experts about how they're going to move the giant shuttle through the streets of los angeles. >> reporter: the shuttle "endeavour" departed l.a.x. on its 200,000-pound transport vehicle and began rolling around 2:00 a.m. >> 80 wheels, and each wheel can move independently, but they're all computer controlled. >> reporter: spectators lined the streets for a chance to witness history. >> it's just the american dream. it's an american icon. it's an american hero. >> and liftoff. >> reporter: after 25 missions and millions of miles in space, "endeavour" will soon call the california science center home. captain mark kelly served as commander of "endeavour's" final space mission and said fans will get an extra treat when visiting the shuttle. >> they'll try to display it in the vertical with an external tank and rocket boosters like it's on the launchpad. >> reporter: but the "endeavour" must make the painstaking 12-mile journey to downtown l.a. dubb
